  21. additional Johnson pieces from Seicento Edition, no. 15, Almayne, from Board Lute Book, f30r notes 1. the plus sign (+) before a note signifies the plus sign ornament symbol in the Board Lute Book 2. The final bar of the piece is in triple time, for some reason. I've corrected it. Originally, it was H+d3c4a5 Qa9 H.a5 ***
  22. additional Johnson pieces from Seicento Edition, no. 20, The Princes Coranto, from Board Lute Book, f27
  23. additional Johnson pieces from Seicento Edition, no. 21, The Witches Dance, from Board Lute Book, f26r There are 2 ornament signs, a plus sign before the tab letter, notated with "+", and a dot before the tab letter, notated "." This one has a question mark next to Johnson's name. Also, it's full of time signature changes,so I'll put them in in brackets and you can do what you like with them. There's no sig at the beginning. I've copied this out of Board, because the Seicento edition has mistakes and is unreliable. But let me know if you have questions, because there are about 6 other lute settings of the Witches Dance. additional Johnson pieces from Seicento Edition, no. 23, The Gipsies Dance, from Board Lute Book, f38v-39r

Cherbury Add. (unproofed additions)

  1. from Robert Johnson: Complete Works, edited by Albert Sundermann (OUP 1970) Piece No. 4, "Pavana Ro: Jhonson" transcribed from facsimile from the Lord Herbert of Cherbury's Lute Book, f. 60v, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (quite a lot of corrections to bass notes, taking editor's suggestions)
  2. from Robert Johnson: Complete Works, edited by Albert Sundermann (OUP 1970) Piece No. 2, "Pavana Ro: Jhonson" transcribed from facsimile from the Lord Herbert of Cherbury's Lute Book, ff. 22v-23 Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge note: I've had to incorporate some of the editor's corrections, because the original is corrupt in places; in making these corrections, he did have references to another source of the piece.
  3. from Robert Johnson: Complete Works, edited by Albert Sundermann (OUP 1970) Piece No. 1, "Fantasia" transcribed from facsimile from the Lord Herbert of Cherbury's Lute Book, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge Note from Jake: I've altered the notation of the diapasons to fit a ten-course lute; in the original the bass notation is strange: F is on the 8th course, D on the 9th, and E is a funny illegible smear. But it seems pretty obvious how it should go.

  6. An Almaine, from Board Lute Book, f28r
  7. The Fairie's Dance, from ML Lute Book, f10r
  8. Complete Works, edited by Albert Sundermann (OUP 1970) Piece No. 13, "Alman R Johnson to the stump by FP" [To the stump] transcribed from facsimile from Ms. Mus. 532, last piece in MS for 15-course lute!
  9. Seicento Edition, no. 20, The Princes Coranto, from Board Lute Book, f27
  10. Seicento Edition, no.
  11. Seicento Edition, no. 23, The Gipsies Dance, from Board Lute Book, f38v-39r
  12. Seicento Edition, no. 24, Almayne, from ML Lute Book, f28
  13. Seicento Edition, no. 25, The Nobleman, from Add 38539, f19
  14. Johnson Pavan ML Lute Book f9v
  15. Johnson Pavan ML Lute Book f9v [note: the comma ornament sign is always nestled between two notes in a passage. For convenience, I've always applied it to the second note of a pair. Also, please note that there are quite a few differences between this and the other version of the piece, besides the ornaments]
  16. Johnson Pavan ML Lute Book f31v [note:the comma ornament sign is always netled between two notes in a passage. For convenience, I've always applied it to the second note of a pair. Also, please note that there are quite a few differences between this and the other version of the piece, besides the ornaments]
